What it does

Land is a public art initiative committed to curating site- and situation-specific contemporary art projects, in los angeles and beyond.

Land commissions-each year land commissions approximately six new public artworks by emerging and established contemporary artists across los angeles. A cornerstone of land's work, these commissions serve as meaningful opportunities for artists to create art outside of the commercial considerations of a gallery and with greater flexibility not offered in museums, promoting long term engagement with a community. For many artists, these are their dream projects. Artists place their artworks directly in neighborhoods and sites that have personal resonance, and these projects often have a profound impact on their careers and future bodies of work. Land commissions in fy25 include new works by carlos agredano, lita albuquerque, vincent enrique hernandez, lizette hernandez, and daid roy, as well as ongoing commissions by khalil joseph and anna sew hoy.
Land programming-land programming is our most responsive series, creating opportunities for immediate public engagement and artist support. Throughout the year, land produces several free single-day events across los angeles. Examples of land programming in fy25 included: plant sale, readings: patricia iglesias peco, and the performance psychic body recalibration by fxr (fac xtra retreat).
Hall of records-together with the los angeles county department of arts and culture's civic art division, land worked with artists teresa baker and felix quintana to develop new artworks that were responsive to the mission of the los angeles county department of regional planning and considers both the people and land that the organization represents and stewards. The artworks are installed at the los angeles county department of regional planning offices at the los angeles county hall of records in downtown los angeles. Both works are now part of the los angeles county art collection.
